  ―― 犯罪類雙邊討論題型

  環(huán)球教育寫作主講 孫笑飛

Discuss both views and give your own opinion.

  題目分析:

Harsh punishment can deter potential crimes.

  完整范文:

Nowadays, social crime rate is increasing to a record high. Some people share the belief that criminals should be thrown into jail, while some others take a different view. In this essay, I will discuss both sides regarding this controversial issue and propose my own suggestion.

On one hand, it sounds reasonable that those who break laws are supposed to be set into jails. In the first place, harsh punishment is surely the most direct and effective approach to decreasing the already-high crime rate. Jail terms, for one thing, are widely considered a severe penalization for law offenders; for another, they might as well be regarded as a means to deter potential criminals. In other words, they have to think twice before they commit a crime. Secondly, it is crystal-clear that throwing offenders into prison brings spiritual consolation to victims who have undergone a lot of sufferings. Otherwise, the victims might feel traumatic, if the criminal did not receive a harsher punishment.

On the other hand, some other alternatives could also be taken into consideration. First, long-term imprisonment would impose a heavy economic burden on the government, as the authority needs to allocate a large sum of money for the living costs of prisoners. As a result, ordering the offenders to do some unpaid community work would be much better. Second, taking part in community service can not only effectively rehabilitate offenders themselves, but it can also help them establish a sense of social responsibility, and eventually become law-abiding citizens after being released. Last, on no account should we ignore a fact that for under-aged delinquents, imprisonment will exert negative influences on their future lives. Also, they tend to be desperate when they are separated from social life. So, why do not we provide the young delinquents with a chance to correct their wrongdoings?

As far as I am concerned, long-term imprisonment is indeed a double-edged sword both for the convicts and for society. Therefore, after considering the arguments above, I hold a view that it should analyzed on a case-by-case basis. Those who commit felonies, like armed robbery, arson, should be put into jails, while under-aged criminals would be well-advised to do some community work, which is able to prevent steins in their future lives.
