題目:Some people think that public media (newspapers) should be allowed to publish people's lives. Other people argue that publishing people's life should be controlled. Discuss both views and give your own ideas.

The private lives of people, especially those celebrities, have been a favourite subject for media companies. This kind of coverage is acceptable, but journalists and media organisations should respect the privacy of people.

It is possibly acceptable to expose the lives of some people in the media since it can bring some problems to attention and call for solutions. For example, some news media may interview low income people who live in cramped conditions, and authorities would be under pressure to adopt some measures to tackle the housing shortage. Another example is some journalists’ attempt to reveal sex scandals of some corrupt government officials, which can attract the attention of law enforcement agencies. If these social issues can be addressed, many people, including those whose lives are put in the spotlight, can benefit from social progress.

On the other hand, if tough laws are imposed on the media, many people, especially movie stars, high-profile politicians and famous sportspeople, would be more likely to live comfortably. They can behave as they please without having to worry about whether their statements in personal lives are likely to attract criticism and whether it is necessary to protect their image in free time. The tabloid press has to face legal limitations when reporting the friends those celebrities make, the romantic relationship they have and family activities they do. If private lives were reported without any restriction, these people would live under enormous pressure and their family relationships could be strained.

In my view, people are more conscious of their behaviour in their private or professional lives, if they are aware that their behaviour can be exposed by the media. Some high-profile figures will be cautious about their images in a media-saturated society, since negative publicity can jeopardise their careers. For example, they may refrain from using bad language when communicating with family members, friends or other people, and other inappropriate or anti-social behaviours such as spitting, driving recklessly and using illegal substances. These celebrities can thus set good examples for young people, encouraging the younger generation to mind manners and behaviours in public places.
